Breakthrough Drug for Acne Remains High-Risk

The breakthrough “acne drug” has been receiving positive results from around the world, though the Food and Drug Authority in the United States is still cautioning people of its use. The popular drug, often known as the “acne drug” has some adverse side effects that include, of all things, depression that ranges from mild euphoria to extreme clinical depression.

There is no contesting the fact that indeed, the new drug can deliver on the grounds that it can make even the most severe cases of acne go away. It’s just that what kind of side effects are we looking at here, and what is the price we have to pay for clearer and more radiant skin, free of painful lesions?

What Acne Takes Away

In both adults and teenagers, acne takes away self esteem, pride in one’s self and of course, self confidence. The inability to mingle well with other people because we are much too aware of the lesions on our skin is socially crippling, and may lead to other problems later on in life.

The “acne drug” in question has had more than 15 years of research behind it, but medical practitioners are still having doubts regarding the general safety of the ones who take it. Like all potent and powerful synthesized medicines, the “acne drug” itself was designed to counteract something using strong chemical compounds.

Now these chemical compounds are not native to the human body, and thus, the side effects (recorded and undiscovered) could potentially harm a person in exchange for the treatment of a skin condition. This seeming disproportion seems to be encouraging more studies to be held in the effort to clear things up with the acne drug.

Potential Side Effects

It might sound frightening, but we have to be completely honest with the facts. The most popular oral treatment for the mild to severe acne vulgaris can potentially cause bleeding and in some cases, miscarriages in pregnant women. This fact, glossed over by many advocates of the wonder pill for acne, should be made as a primary consideration for women who are planning to take the pill.

If the acne drug can potentially cause uterine bleeding, then it’s not advisable for women who don’t have regular periods and have had medical histories of adverse reactions to strong medication.

Suicidal behavior is another factor here. In a small percentage of test subjects, suicidal behavior or suicidal tendencies formed. It seems that this particular part of the side effects is not being thoroughly explored as of yet by the company producing the acne drug.

For these reasons, regulation is now being implemented in the prescription of this high-risk acne medication. In medical parlance, the variety of acne that is most suitable to be treated by this strong drug is recalcitrant nodular-type acne. The drug is not for mild acne, and is definitely not suitable for children as young as 13.

With so many possible negative effects on its belt, indeed, this drug has a long way to go. But at least in the meantime, those who are willing to take the risk have alternatives to the treatment of their acne.
