DVD Copying Not As Frequent As Once Upon Time Reflected

By: Isaiah Henry

A comprehensive study (conducted by the NPD Group) reveals what many have known all along. DVD ripping does not pose a major threat to the movie industry. While movie execs feared theyd lose billions of dollars, like music industry counterparts, they failed to take a very important factor into consideration. Music is not being ripped and sold; no, it is being shared amongst users worldwide via legal peer-to-peer sharing sites like Limewire and Kaza, as well as many others. The movie industry could, in fact, lose billions if movie sharing sites begin to pop up on the web; as of this time, there are no such sites and no evidence that they are in the works.

Data complied and released by the NPD Group shows that only approximately 2% of computer owners (with internet connection) practice DVD ripping. The study also reveals the two main reasons DVD ripping isnt as widely practiced as music file sharing. Most people just are too impatient to wait they think the ripping practice takes a great deal of time. Per Russ Crupnick, Senior Analyst with NPD: In my brief experimentation with these applications, they seem to work fineand quickly. Others dont rip because they are concerned with DRM regulations now in place. Even in this society that demands instant gratification, DVD ripping is actually a very fast process. With proper technology, like that offered by Isofter and others, ripping can be completed in less than fifteen minutes.

In a society where many are obsessed with instant gratification i.e. fast food, immediate weight-loss, etc. it is not surprising that time was of concern. In fact, the entire process of ripping a DVD takes under fifteen minutes if the computer owner has a fairly quick internet connection and the necessary software and equipment. Some have not practiced DVD ripping due to recent measures put in place by the DRM (Management of Digital rights). They do not understand these measures and, therefore, are fearful of them.

What is DRM? DRM, or Management of Digital Rights, is a set of measures taken by movie content owners to control how digital data and/or hardware is obtained and utilized. It also covers the limitations put in place by such owners with regard to a single or precise digital work or machine. Many people remain confused about the protection of copyrights with the limitations put in place by DRM. The measures in place have nothing to do with copyright infringement. Instead, DRMs regulations enforce the protection against the unlawful use of DVD ripping when it is performed with the sole intent of resale. DRM is more interested in keeping the DVD ripping business to a minimum, so the movie business does not lose large sums of money like the music industry has.

Even with the latest ripping technology widely available, most people are not using it. It should be understood that DVD ripping is not an illegal enterprise. The practice is legal as long as copies are not ripped aimed for resale. It is peer-to-peer file sharing that has cost the music industry a great deal. Movie execs time would be better spent trying to stop that practice rather that on the relatively obscure practice of DVD ripping.
