Hurricane Katrina was an absolute disaster for the casino industry in Biloxi, Mississippi and surrounding areas. Most of the casinos which were set on the water along the shoreline were damaged seriously and some were destroyed. Because the casinos were built on barges to meet the legal issues about water-based casinos, many of the barges came onshore, often found several blocks inland. Because the casinos are a major part of the Gulf Coast economy, this was a true tragedy for the visitors to the area, the people who lived and worked in Biloxi and the casino owners as well. But what is the situation in Biloxi now?
The good news is that the first casino reopened in December, 2005. The Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino had workers scrambling to finish the restoration so that it could be opened in a festive manner. Slot machines were tested and more than 1,000 workers were able to return to their jobs. The atmosphere was one of hilarity and joy for everyone involved when the ribbon was cut. After going through so much from this disaster, it was great to see things beginning to return to normal, at least for some of the area. While some of the employees were still living in temporary housing, this did not stop their pleasure at being able to return to some sense of stability by returning to their former jobs.
The Isle of Capri Casino reopened later that same month, coming back just before the end of 2005. This provided lots of places for people to stay in the area with two of the major hotels and casinos back up and running again. The magnificent Beau Rivage, the biggest and finest of the hotel casinos along Biloxi's Gulf Coast line will reopen in August, 2006, hoping to be able to open the doors on August 29th, the one-year anniversary of the day Hurricane Katrina wiped out so many people's lives. The future of some of the other establishments in the Biloxi area is still not clear. The casinos that were totally destroyed have yet to announce exact plans. The Mississippi Gulf Coast, including Biloxi, will come back in full force, and is expected to be much better than before.
The legislature recently passed a law that the casinos can move slightly inshore, providing some assurance that this type of devastation will not happen again. This does not mean that future hurricanes will not damage the area, but by building casinos firmly on land, there will not be a problem of barges breaking loose and crashing into homes that otherwise might have survived. Of course, recovery will take time, but even now the junkets and buses into the Biloxi area for gamblers to visit the casinos are beginning to return. You should not rule Biloxi out for any gambling holiday you might have in mind. The area has a lot to offer and the casinos would love to welcome you back!
