Spruce Up Your Christmas Decorations

By: Jessica Vandelay

There’s nothing bad about using the same decorations every year but when you’re ready for a change a great resource for a variety of new ideas, affordable and expensive, bought and handmade, are home magazines. One of the easiest ways to spruce up your Christmas decorations is to find new ways to decorate your Christmas tree. Good examples of home magazines are Real Simple, Southern Living, Sunset, Good Housekeeping and House Beautiful.

The tradition of displaying a Christmas tree at Christmas is a tradition from Germany; some historians believed Martin Luther started this tradition in the 16th century while other historians date it back to the 18th century. Queen Charlotte and later Prince Albert brought the German tradition to England and later German immigrants brought the tradition to the U.S.

For many families picking out a live Christmas tree is a major part of their Christmas celebration. Some families choose to chop down their own trees while others buy live Christmas trees through civic organizations or Christmas tree farmers. Most popular live Christmas tree varieties are Douglas Firs, Foot Balsam Firs, Scotch Pines, White Pines and Spruces.

Other families choose to buy a reusable fake Christmas tree, usually made out of plastic. Good Housekeeping magazine is a great source for guides to buying both live and fake Christmas trees. The Good Housekeeping buying guide will help you determine how to pick out a tree that best fits your family’s needs, including budget.

There are all kinds of combinations of lights and ornaments for Christmas trees. Many families decorate their trees with themes in mind or specific color combinations. A lot of people prefer homemade decorations like stringing popcorn and draping it on their trees. Magazines like Martha Stewart Living, Southern Living and Cottage Living offer both traditional and new ways to decorate Christmas trees.

Other popular traditional evergreens and plants used for Christmas decorations are poinsettia, holly, mistletoe, amaryllis and Christmas cactus. Martha Stewart Living magazine features directions on how to make wreaths out of other colorful items, such as bells, pistachios, glass balls, cranberries and straw.

Also popular in the U.S. is to decorate the outside of houses with electric lights. Lights come in both white and a variety of colors and are draped on rooftops, trees and shrubs of houses. Many lights are also in the shapes of sleighs, Santa Claus, snowmen, elves, angels and in some cases Nativity scenes.
