Spyware: Computer threats

By: John Browning

Spyware is dangerous software application or small piece of code that is written especially to steal the user's personal data like credit card details, social security numbers, online passwords, or similar information or to keep an eye on the person's online behaviour. Spyware is generally developed in such a manner that it gets installed without the computer user's permission and in most cases the user may not be even aware that his/her online activities are being observed. Many spyware applications can also hijack web browsers, display unsolicited popups and download software, computer viruses or more spyware applications. Spyware detection and deletion can be sometimes challenging because the files are often concealed to the layman user.

Earlier the word "spyware" applied to computer hardware that was meant for espionage roles. However, after it was used in a press release in the year 2000 by Gregor Freud, a security expert at Zone Labs, the term has taken on its present day significance. Today, almost everyone who is familiar with computers and the World Wide Web may be aware of virus programs, spyware applications and adware.

Spyware applications usually get installed by utilizing security loopholes in Windows or when the computer user unknowingly installs malicious or "tagged" from CDs. The main difference between computer viruses and spyware programs is that unlike virus programs, spyware do not replicate i.e. make copies of themselves and spread to other systems. Certain trojans also download spyware programs without the user's permission.

Windows is more insecure to spyware programs and other such malware. Apple MAC OS and other operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD derivatives are less vulnerable compared to Windows. There are differing views as to why there are few spyware programs targeting GNU/linux and PCBSD. Some claim that these operating systems are inherently less vulnerable and it is problematic to write spyware programs to run on these. Other security analysts claim that since the market penetration of these is way lower when compared with Windows, spyware writers do not consider it worth the effort to program spyware specifically for these operating systems.

If you use a Windows based computer, it is recommended to periodically install updates to your operating system to protect yourself from spyware and other malware. Windows update files contain rectifications and patches to security vulnerabilities. It is also suggested to install and use another browser like Mozilla Firefox or Opera instead of the default Internet Explorer. These web browsers are much more safe and can help you in keeping your system spyware free.

You should also install a effective virus removal software and update it regularly. Many good anti-virus software can detect spyware. However, you can also install spyware removal software along with virus removal software for maximum benefit. A firewall is also recommended. Most anti-virus scanners or Internet security suites, as they are known, come with a firewall as well.
