why it is a bad idea to use hydrated lime to reduce odors in your septic system

By: platypus

Why it is a bad idea to use hydrated lime to reduce odors in your septic system.

It has been proposed by various sources, that a smelly septic tank can be deodorized by adding 5 kg of hydrated lime to a bucket of water and flushing the mixture down the toilet. The theory behind this is to raise the pH to counteract the acidic conditions which cause malodors. This might have originated from the use of hydrated lime to “treat” septic tank pump-outs before the effluent is deposited on fields. The reason this pre-treatment is recommended is because the lime will increase the pH to 12.4. At pH levels greater than 12, the cell membranes of harmful pathogens are destroyed. The problem is that it will also kill the beneficial bacteria in the septic tank and leach field.

Although the suggested dose for deodorizing is 10 kg and the suggested dose for “neutralizing” raw sewerage is 47 kg per 4,000 liters, any significant increase in the pH can be lethal to bacteria. Another factor is that hydrated lime is only slightly soluble in water and most of the undissolved powder will sit in the septic tank, ready to be dissolved when fresh effluent enters. This could cause the pH to rise above 12.0 in spurts or continuously. This will result in a “bio dead” septic tank and leach field. Continuously “treating” your septic tank will result in long term and maybe permanent damage to you septic system.

Another problem is that lime is so caustic that over time, it will cause the baffles in a septic tank to fall off and ruin your septic tank (the same thing can happen with the salt generated by water softeners).

The proposed lime treatment also suggests purchasing enzyme tablets at the hardware store. This is a waste of time and money. Enzymes are very limited in their capabilities and are effective in very narrow pH ranges and temperatures and are selective for certain compounds. They also become spent in a short amount of time.

Your best course of action to counteract odors from your septic system is to revive your beneficial bacteria colonies by a quality bacteria product such as FLUSH-IT®. Bacteria double in numbers every 20 minutes and create their own enzymes needed to digest various waste products.
